Stuyvesant High School Information

How do I buy a PHysical Education (PE) Uniform for my Stuy Student?

Stuy PE Uniforms are mandatory for all PE classes at Stuyvesant.  They can be purchased HERE.  PE Uniforms cannot be purchased in-person at Camp Stuy. Students only need one set of the uniform, and indeed, the website only permits the purchase of one set per transaction.  The regular uniforms are cotton, while the UnderArmor options are made of Dri-Fit-type material.  If you or your student are not able to attend Camp Stuy (and pick up your pre-ordered Stuy PE Uniform in person), students can pick up their pre-ordered Stuy PE Uniforms from Room 103 during the first few days of school.

Where can I find information about Stuyvesant that doesn't appear on the Stuy PA website?

Planning for College

What college planning resources are available to Stuyvesant students and families?

Naviance will be your first and most important resource for college planning. It is a web-based research and planning tool for Stuyvesant students, parents, and guidance counselors. The website manages individual students as they move through the entire college planning, application, and decision process. Click here for more information about how to access your account.

Juniors and Seniors should check the College Office’s walk-in hours to receive help from the counselors on various college admissions related issues.

In addition, the PA frequently hosts webinars on college admissions. Keep an eye on our weekly newsletter for the latest events. We also maintain a list of college prep service providers here.

Clarity on Teacher & Supplemental Recommendations

The College Office reminds seniors of a few things that may help to settle nerves and/or avoid unnecessary confusion as the EA/ED deadlines approach.

  • teacher recs and other school documents do not need to be submitted far in advance of deadlines. The vast majority of colleges and universities will accept these documents on, or after, application deadlines.  You have to submit by your deadlines and can submit well in advance if you'd like, but please do not badger your teachers or stress yourselves out if your teachers have not submitted already. Think about it...if you had an assignment due on 11/1, and your teachers started demanding that you turn it in a week earlier, you'd be less than pleased with them...and rightfully so :) Early Action for UMichigan has historically been a fairly unique exception...those teacher recs need to be submitted online prior to Nov. 1, to be safe.  But otherwise, please give your teachers the time they need to write their letters.
  • you can submit your apps whenever you'd like before your deadlines. You don't need to wait for your teacher recs or anything else.
  • supplemental recs typically need to be requested for each college in Common App as an "Other Recommender", or sent via email.  They cannot be submitted via Naviance. Not all colleges will accept supplemental recs, and by definition, they are not a necessary part of the application process.  If you have a great supplemental rec provider that adds something new and important to your file, great; but if not, don't worry about it.  Also, if you plan on using a supplemental rec, check your college's websites to determine if they will accept such a rec and, if so, how they prefer that it be submitted.
  • if your supplemental rec writer happens to be a Stuy staff member (a coach, for example) do NOT assign them in Naviance or in Common App. Instead, send them the email address for each college to which you would like that rec sent, and they can email that rec directly to colleges as needed.

We hope this helps.  Remember, if you need help, contact your assigned college counselor.

Scholarships

BASIC STEPS AND LINKS TO APPLY FOR FINANCIAL AID

Instructions for applying for aid will always be available on the websites of your colleges; make sure to review these instructions so that you don’t miss anything

  • identify your financial aid deadlines.  Those will be listed on the websites on the colleges.  If you are applying EA/ED/REA to any selective private college, expect that you have financial aid deadlines that may fall as early as November 1
  • gather important documents (1040 & W2 forms, bank statements, ssns, etc.)
  • US Citizens and Permanent Residents seeking need-based financial aid will need to complete the FAFSA. Students ineligible to file a FAFSA may still qualify for the NYS Dream Act.
  • In order to start/complete a FAFSA, both the student and a parent contributor will need a FSA ID
  • many private colleges, and some out-of-state public flagship campuses, will also require aid applicants to file the CSS Profile
  • other colleges like UChicago and Princeton might require their own aid form instead of the CSS, but, in addition to the FAFSA
  • after completing the primary financial aid forms, some colleges may want to verify this information by reviewing supporting documentation such as federal tax returns, w2 forms, etc.  CSS Profile using institutions often do this using a service called IDOC.
  • if you will attend college in New York and have a NTI of $125,000 or less, you should apply for TAP after completing the FAFSA or sometime this winter. TAP only allows you to include one NYS college, so you may need to update the college listed in the spring if your enrollment plan changes
  • check your email regularly.  If something is missing or incorrect with your aid applications or documentation, most colleges will email you.  Also, you can check within your applicant portals after you have applied to see if your aid requirements are met
  • once you have completed the financial aid application process, each college that admits you this year should provide you with a financial aid package sometime after your admission notification

If you have questions or need help, reach out to your assigned college counselor and/or the financial aid offices of the colleges to which you’re applying.  This comprehensive guide might also be of use.

Important Info for Georgetown and MIT Applications

There is always a bit of confusion for Stuy students surrounding application logistics for MIT and Georgetown.  If you're applying to MIT or Georgetown, please see below.

MIT

● You need to make sure you manually add MIT to your Naviance list, and to indicate your application plan ( EA or RD).  Refer back to our email to all seniors on 10/1

● MIT is Naviance compatible.  While you will need to request recs from your teachers and college counselor (who will submit the letter your guidance counselor wrote for you) through the MIT website, our staff submit rec letters and other school documents through Naviance, and not the MIT portal.  That is perfectly fine with MIT; they do not require the MIT specific forms from Stuy

● It often takes MIT several weeks to process documents.  Relax; all of your documents will arrive on time for review.  If anything is missing in mid -November, check in with your assigned college counselor

Georgetown

● Georgetown is NOT Naviance compatible, but you must manually add it and your corresponding application plan to Naviance so we know that you’re applying

● Teachers submit their recs to GTown through the online GTown portal after you have invited them through their application

● Our college counselors do not use the Georgetown SSR form, even though you will request that form from them online.  Instead, we upload your guidance counselor rec letter, fall schedule, official transcript, and the Stuy High School Profile to a portal called Slate.  Georgetown then pulls these documents from Slate.

● Georgetown is perfectly fine with this process (Slate) and do not require their specific SSR form for Stuy applicants

● Remember that Georgetown does NOT accept self-reported ACT or SAT scores; you must have them sent directly from the appropriate testing organization (ACT or CollegeBoard)

Remember, the College Office communicates with both of these admissions offices as needed, and we send students to both institutions every year.  Our process works well and allows us to manage the high volume of documents that must be sent from Stuy more efficiently.
